Idealist approach to line work of Edward Acosta to portray his forward designs. We spoke with visual artist from New York.

What inspires you to create art?

Art to me is everything and I draw inspiration from everywhere. Experiences, places, memories and people all play a role along with my strong passion for bold design.

How do you reveal your personality through a process of creation? Is your art very personal or pursues a global issue?

My work is very personal to me and relative to what I am going through at the time. The approach in my practice says a lot about my personality as well. I have a perfectionist approach to my work and use of color. I also enjoy great contrast and balance, which I always try to incorporate into my work.

Why do you mostly paint stripes?

They are strokes. These stokes are meant to show a range of motion. Many times, they are pulled from drawings and I am constantly thinking about making work that is ethereal.

Do you paint them chaotically, or trying to follow a certain pattern and curves?

I think a lot about how the composition, colors and marks play a role in evoking elegance. The final approach is not chaotic at all, as it’s meticulously executed. That being said, when it comes to my initial drawings, sketches and doodles, those have some childlike characteristics initially and are thought out a bit chaotically.

Which one of your works may be considered the most significant piece?

That’s a difficult question to answer. I am constantly working to evolve; therefore, the evolution of my work is what I find most significant.

Why did you decide to use your Awaken series for collaboration with FOXYLAB? Is it a choice from a more artistic or more fashion point of view?

Both. I believe everything is about timing. When the opportunity presented itself, I had been working on Awaken. The design process was inspired by some of the bold elements from that body of work.

Do you see a connection of Awaken with any designs presented by famous luxury labels?

The day I left the hospital, I had already finished drawing 25 sketches of doctors, nurses, and other good people. My wife helped me make a “thank you note” with these drawings for each of them. They were so surprised and happy.

From your point of view, what role does abstract expressionist art play in fashion nowadays?

I have always seen a strong correlation between art and fashion in general. In terms of abstract expressionist art in particular, I believe that the connection lies within the “expressionistic” approach. While art & fashion are both a form of expression, there is a beauty to the spontaneity in abstract expressionism that is difficult to translate into fashion due to certain constraints.

Art has been a huge part of fashion in the second half of 20th century; do you think its role is degrading?

I feel that it is only degrading when companies, in any industry not just fashion utilize art for the wrong reasons and do not go through the proper channels to obtain or properly use the art. Otherwise, I feel fashion and art go hand in hand.

Why did you decide to be a part of art & fashion collaboration?

I have always been inspired by fashion. Apparel was actually one of my mediums for many years. As part of my journey, I had been involved with apparel design in urban wear, so it made sense to me and felt great to tap into that skill set.

A thin edge of seduction and the consumerism fetish is thoroughly blurred in Acosta’s art in the use of both light, and dark tones. Bold lines serve as a fashionable juxtaposition of a peaceful dream-like state and a vivid color, representing action and presence in the moment.
