“Pacita Abad: Trapunto” at MoMA PS1, New York

Through September 2, 2024

MoMA PS1 presents the first-ever retrospective of Pacita Abad, a trailblazing Filipina-American artist (1946–2004). Showcasing over 50 pieces from her remarkable 32-year career, this exhibition offers a rare glimpse at works that have mostly never been seen in the U.S. Abad, who taught herself many of her techniques, is famous for her trapuntos—unique quilted paintings made by stitching and stuffing her canvases rather than stretching them.

Experience the tactile brilliance of Pacita Abad’s “trapunto” paintings. These pieces transcend traditional painting, creating three-dimensional quilt-like textures through innovative stuffing and stitching techniques. It’s art you can almost touch.
