CELEBRATING BLACKNESS THROUGH SCULPTURES: PJ HARPER’S JOURNEY OF ARTISTIC EMPOWERMENT

In the world of PJ Harper, a white-passing mixed-race boy coming of age in Scotland, the desire to celebrate Blackness emerged as a powerful response to subtle negativity and outright racism. Harper, an artist known for his sculptures and drawings, has carved a niche that embraces the strength and beauty of Black women, elevating them to godlike status.
Inspired by characters from mythology, history, and the present, Harper envisions how these figures would exist in his own world. Through his artwork, he conjures flawless glamazons, captivating viewers with their allure while challenging them with their confrontational strength. Much like sirens, his creations draw you in, projecting an unforgiving power that resonates with internet aesthetics.
Harper’s artistic journey began in childhood, as he crafted his own dolls and gradually developed his passion into a meticulous practice. After a brief period at the Glasgow School of Art, he took a leap of faith, selling his work online and receiving notable commissions from acclaimed individuals like R&B star Elah Hale and movie director Lee Daniels. These encouraging experiences prompted him to leave art school and dedicate his full focus to his craft.
Using polymer clay, Harper sculpts busts and full figures, placing them within various contexts that range from reimagined myths to intimate scenes. In doing so, he delves into themes of race and power, offering a lens that amplifies Black strength and beauty. His creations aim to shift Black figures from supporting roles to the center stage, imbuing them with the status of super-beings inspired by both ancient Greek myths and 1970s Blaxploitation films.
Harper’s artistic journey extends beyond his physical artwork. On Instagram, where he goes by the handle Pig.malion, a playful reference to the Greek myth, he has amassed nearly 100,000 followers. The recognition he has garnered online has recently translated into real-world success, culminating in a solo exhibition at Good Black Art in New York last December. Harper’s work derives its power from a fusion of initial influences and the transformative process of creation, as each piece takes on a unique strength of its own.
For Harper, this artistic expression is a means of communicating his appreciation of femininity and challenging traditional norms. It is not about drag or performance; instead, he communicates through the act of making art. His passion stems from a longing to see Black figures occupy leading roles rather than being relegated to supporting characters. Growing up, he witnessed the success of his late grandfather, Paul Wynter, a two-time Mr. Universe, yet yearned for him to assume more prominent positions rather than the often assigned “helper” roles.
PJ Harper’s artistic journey exemplifies a celebration of Blackness and a powerful reimagining of traditional narratives. Through his sculptures and drawings, he reshapes perceptions, inspiring viewers to recognize and appreciate the strength and beauty inherent in Black individuals. With each creation, he sparks a conversation that transcends boundaries and connects people through the shared admiration for the divine qualities present in his art.
