SMALLDITCH is a «trashion» atelier of haute couture created by interdisciplinary artist Martha Haversham. She has a good eye for the objects with potential. Martha can turn any street trash into fashionable items. Compared to “fast fashion”, her “found fashion” is more original, eco-friendly and accessible to everyone.

Martha, can you tell us about the concept of your series of works titled «Found Fashion»?

Nature’s detritus – fallen leaves, feathers etc., are exquisite. The stitching is the best, the fabrics incredible. I take something found by chance on a walk and transform it into a seasonal garment we can all relate to, at a scale that makes us smile. We live around luxury, all for free – amazing isn’t it?

Your “trashion” is eco-friendly and doesn’t harm nature. What is the best thing we as consumers can do to reduce our ecological footprint?

Consume less, value more. Do not start wars.

You grew up surrounded by art, in a family of a photographer and a ballerina. What did your parents do to develop your creativity?

They left me alone to play, dance, be silly and observe. I was a grubby free spirit in a family that was quite an odd fit surrounded by like-minded individuals. My father amassed a lot of interesting objects for his work, some came from skips, treasures to him, worthless to others. I learnt that you can create something from very little and that is gold dust.

Can you remember your first encounter with art?

Aged four, having my lunch in a cardboard box and thinking it was my own luxury car. I pretended to change gear with a clothes’ peg.

Your works are so original. Do you think one can learn creativity or is it something you are born with?

Picasso said: ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’ So my aim is too regress!

What role does your project Smallditch play in your life now?

Smallditch is my full-time career, every day I will make at least one collage. To improve, you have to keep making stuff.

Today you have 75,5K followers. What does showing your art on Instagram mean to you?

Daily critiques, career opportunities and discovering exceptional visual artists. Over the years, I’ve used IG as a free, global art school. I doubt I will ever graduate, honing my technique is all part of the fun.

Tell us the best thing about being an artist.

What is your personal motto?
