Grace & Grit: Vladlena Bobrovnikova on Handball, Femininity, and Her Foxylab Collaboration

Vladlena Bobrovnikova is no stranger to pushing boundaries—both on the court and in fashion. As an Olympic handball champion, she’s mastered the art of resilience, strength, and teamwork. But beyond the game, she’s also making waves in the world of style, recently teaming up with Foxylab on a bold, color-infused collaboration. In this exclusive interview, Bobrovnikova opens up about the pressures of defending her Olympic title, her love for fashion, and how she balances the fierceness of an athlete with the elegance of femininity.

You became an Olympic champion at the 2016 games in Rio, how intense is the preparation now considering that you’re aiming to protect your title?

When our team went to Rio, many girls didn’t get ready as much, a lot of people underestimated us and didn’t consider us the favorites. When we eventually stood on a pedestal, it felt like conquering the mount Everest, and it is totally different, when after 5 years we have to stay at the same height and show the same result. That’s why, of course, the preparation is way more intense now, because we have to protect our title.

In your Instagram you have a lot of photos in stylish outfits, does your sport allow you to dress up sometimes?

With our life rhythm and constant traveling with the team, most of the times we have to wear the club or the National Team uniforms. Of course, when I’m back home from a long trip, the first thing I wear out is some kind of dress, I grab my husband and daughter and we go out to eat in a restaurant. I love feeling and looking like a girl. Also, I love shopping online at nights when we’re on team trips, although now I don’t even have time for it.

In NBA, the pre-game fashion is essential, is women's handball the same?

Love this question! Unfortunately, we don’t really have the pre-game dressing up tradition. I like coming to a game already wearing the game uniform, to make sure I don’t forget it (laughs). With me I only bring the shoes and something to change into after the game. I wold love it if we had the pre-game fashion, it would be such an awesome occasion to show up well-dressed!

Recently, you and your teammates appeared on the cover of the magazine that was devoted to showing femininity of handball players, how critical is the question of femininity in sports in Russia?

I don’t think it’s a very critical issue. In general, I think handball is a pretty gracious sport. Every girl has different body complexity. Some are tiny and feisty, some are taller. Everyone has a unique body and beauty, and they all radiate a particular sportive strength, very strong energy and inner beauty. We’re fighters in life and on the court, and it doesn’t stop us from being feminine. Sometimes we can be rough in a game, but outside of that we’re fragile ladies. Overall, I think handball is a very feminine sport

You lived in Italy for 3 years and you are married to an Italian. Do you also like any of the great Italian artists?

I wouldn’t say I have a favorite Italian artist, my soul is more open to Italian street-art. One time me and my husband were at a friends’ wedding in a little town Orgosolo, in Sardinia. This is a very small and mafia town, the welcome road sign has several bullet holes, and it looks scary in the beginning, but then the town reveals its beauty. It is very touristy, because of abundant colorful graffitis covering multiple city walls. I am very fond of bright colors, thats why I have these views deep in my memory, it was incredible seeing this street art with my own eyes.

The design that you created in collaboration with Elena contains a lot of colors. What do these colors represent?

As I said before, I love bright colors, they put me in a cheerful spirit. I feel like colors express me as an athlete and a personality, and different colors characterize different sides of my character.
