The 13th Edition of ASVOFF, which was physically held in Paris during three days (December 1-3, 2021) is an evident prove of this assumption.
The story of the Festival, one of a kind, started in 2005 when a fashion icon, journalist and arguably the world’s first fashion blogger Diane Pernet organized its first edition in Paris. Have been living in the French capital since ever, this native American who used to be friends with Andy Warhol, Diane known to all fashionistas for her inimitable unique look, all in black with sun glasses (even at night) and incredible high headgear (also black, even at July heat) which she stylishly decorates with massive insects (sometimes spiders, this time – snails). By curating ASVOFF Madame Pernet aims to promote the emerging and young-at-heart visionaries through the changeable landscape of fashion field. A beautiful and noble initiative that assures an unfading interest of the audience to the festival and its durability.
Recently in the absence of physical shows and as a response to COVID-19, we have been witnessing the burst of digital fashion films shot by the brands to express themselves alternatively i.e. virtually. Thus every house presents its digital version of collection replacing classical catwalk, be it a 1+ hour long movie of Martin Margiela where the filmmaker Olivier Dahan invites us to a «Folk horror tale» of John Galliano, luxuriant fantasy or a 7-minutes long sky trip of a futuristic Iris van Herpen directed by Masha Vayukova for her latest collection «Earthrise».
The event unveiled a flourishing and eclectic jury panel of renowned artist, designers, content creators who are committed to encouraging new talent and promoting diversity across the world of filmmaking (Bryanboy, LUTZ, Daphne Guinnesse, Roisin Murphy, Nicolas Kemp, Osei Bonsu if to mention a few).
While internationally acclaimed film director Bruce LaBruce led the ASVOFF 13’s official film selection as the Grand Jury President. His own movie, “Saint-Narcisse” was screened at the opening ceremony of the festival, put all the audience (included the author of these lines) into the sensual if not to say erotic mood just before the DJ party – thank you Bruce so much for this fun and beautiful representation of human feelings, it was mesmerizing!
