Ali Mahdavi’s is a French-Iranian fashion designer renowned for his innovative and provocative designs. He is also a personal photographer of Dita von Teese, close friend of Jean Paul Gaultier. In 2010, he gained significant attention for his collaboration with the Parisian cabaret Crazy Horse, where he designed costumes that blended traditional Iranian elements with modern aesthetics. Ali collaborates with such magazines as Vanity Fair, NumĂ©ro and Dazed & Confused. He is famous for the unique sense of beauty which he skillfully recreates through images using light effects like a painter uses his color palette.
Mahdavi’s work often reflects a fusion of cultural influences, drawing from his Iranian heritage and French upbringing. This unique blend has positioned him as a significant figure in contemporary fashion, celebrated for challenging conventional design boundaries.
Mahdavi has been different from the very beginning. At the Beaux-Arts de Paris he used to sign his works « Ali-N », the surname which indeed conveyed the real character of this exceptional artist who doesn’t suit any conventional frameworks. With the choking frankness the Iranian-born living legend reveals to us the hypocrisy of the fashion world, where all positive changes cover the commercial reasons which rule the Fashion and Art industry. Ali also shared how hard it is to live as gay with a rare alopecia disease and being rejected by the artistic and gay community.
Painter, illustrator, fashion designer, stylist, creative director, photographer – this multidisciplinary creative has so many facets, that it is almost impossible to highlight only one of his talents. Ali opens up about his childhood; defines his sexuality and shares desires to shoot a porn movie.
