Founded in 1970 by gallerists from Basel, Art Basel today is the world’s premier art shows for Modern and Contemporary art, taking place in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris. Defined by the region, each show is unique, which is reflected in artworks presented, and collaborations with local institutions for each edition. Art Basel’s engagement has expanded beyond art fairs through new digital platforms and collaborations.

This year the fair is marking its 20-year anniversary in Miami Beach and Art Basel is making the largest edition it ever held with 282 galleries exhibiting from 38 countries with multiple first-time participants.  Highlighting the 20 years anniversary date Noah Horowitz has been appointed new CEO of Art Basel, succeeding Marc Spiegler, Global Director Art Basel, who has taken the decision to leave MCH Group and explore the next phase of his artworld career.

This year art Basel  partnered up with UBS and will take place from December 1 to December 3 at the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) , with VIP and press previews happening few days earlier.

Below are detailed outline of what to expect from Art Basel this year:

Galleries

212 of the world’s leading galleries representing paintings, sculptures, installations, and more. Several exhibitors will return to the fair following a hiatus.

Solo exhibitions by emerging international artists. This sector will feature 19 solo presentations and welcomes 11 new participants.

Dedicated to galleries presenting new work by up to three artists, the Nova sector will feature 22 presentations from 23 galleries.

Survey

Featuring work created before 2000, the Survey sector includes 17 galleries, including nine newcomers. Highlights include a historical presentation of rare wood, marble, and bronze sculptures and works on paper.

Edition

The 2022 Edition sector will consist of 11 exhibitors, exemplifying the field of prints and editioned works.

Visitors to Art Basel Miami Beach will have the opportunity to experience South Florida’s world-class museums and private collections.

Design Miami/ Basel

The 18th edition of Design Miami will bring together world-class presentations of 20th- and 21st-century design, hosting a global forum for collectible design.

Meridians

The Meridians sector invites exhibitors to showcase monumental works which extend beyond the standard art fair format. Magalí Arriola, Director of Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, will curate the sector for the third consecutive year.

Conversations

We know it is a hard work to be represented in Art Basel and only best of the best make it and in our turn we want to highlight 25 newly participating galleries include: Alexandre Gallery (New York); And Now (Dallas); Edel Assanti (London); Berry Campbell (New York); José de la Mano (Madrid); Bridget Donahue (New York); Emalin (London); Herlitzka + Faria (Barrio Norte); K Art (Buffalo); Kristina Kite Gallery (Los Angeles); Paulo Kuczynski (São Paulo); Magenta Plains (New York); P21 (Seoul); Queer Thoughts (New York); Residency Art Gallery (Inglewood); Rolf Art (Buenos Aires); Meredith Rosen Gallery (New York); Chris Sharp Gallery (Los Angeles); Soft Opening (London); Sophie Tappeiner (Vienna); Stars (Los Angeles); Sultana (Arles and Paris); Super Dakota (Brussels); Rodeo (London and Piraeus); Watanuki Ltd. / Toki-no-Wasuremono (Tokyo); and Yavuz Gallery (Redfern and Singapore). The fair continues to offer differing models for participation, including joint booths by A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) and Goodman Gallery (Cape Town, Johannesburg, and London) as well as Bridget Donahue (New York) and Hannah Hoffman (Los Angeles) in the Galleries sector; and Super Dakota (Brussels) and Helen Anrather (New York) in the Nova sector.

Marc Spiegler

Marc Spiegler is an american french journalist, joined MCH Group in 2007 as Co-Director Art Basel and, since 2012, has been Global Director Art Basel. “Following the successful premiere of Paris and with the imminent 20th anniversary of Art Basel Miami Beach, I am leaving Art Basel on a high note.” he says. “Leading the next stage of Art Basel’s evolution will take many years and a different set of skills. Having launched new shows in Hong Kong and Paris, staged 43 fairs, and led Art Basel through a global pandemic, it has come time to pass the baton. Fortunately, my friend Noah Horowitz – the perfect person to carry Art Basel forward – will be leading that development.

As a Fashion Art Director, “David Downtown” and “Tony Viramontes” inspire me with their powerful yet clear line work.

Noah Horowitz

Noah Horowitz  joins from Sotheby’s where he served as Worldwide Head of Gallery & Private Dealer Services since September 2021. Previously, he held a four- year tenure as Executive Director of The Armory Show in New York, after directing the first ever online- only fair, VIP Art Fair, from 2010-11. He has a Ph.D. in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and is the author of Art of the Deal: Contemporary Art in a Global Financial Market (Princeton University Press, 2011).

The 20th-anniversary edition marks two decades of growth and impact by Art Basel as a cultural cornerstone not only Florida, but across the Americas, and beyond.
