The highly anticipated exhibition ‘Hardcore’ takes the art world by storm, showcasing the works of 18 artists who fearlessly delve into the power dynamics of sex, the multifaceted nature of intimacy, and our reactions to them. In a time where culture has muted discussions around challenges of sexuality explorations, this exhibition boldly tests the boundaries of human experience, defies social conventions, and creates a platform for profound psychological exploration. Through their thought-provoking creations, these artists ignite reactions, inspire contemplation, and foster essential dialogues on fundamental human questions.
A Diverse Range of Artists:
The roster of talented artists featured in ‘Hardcore’ is as diverse as the subject matter they explore. From Darja Bajagić to Monica Bonvicini, Miriam Cahn to Elaine Cameron-Weir, KING COBRA (documented as Doreen Lynette Garner) to Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose, Maryam Hoseini to Tishan Hsu, Stanislava Kovalcikova to Bruce LaBruce, Tayeba Begum Lipi to Monica Majoli, and Tiona Nekkia McClodden to Carolee Schneemann, this exhibition brings together a remarkable collection of visionaries.
The Curators and Their Vision:
‘Hardcore’ is curated by the brilliant minds of Sadie Coles and John O’Dohert. With their understanding of contemporary art, Coles and O’Dohert have meticulously curated an exhibition that sparks discourse.
Bob Flanagan Exploring the Boundaries of Human Experience:
Within the exhibition, viewers encounter works that redefine notions of pleasure and pain. Bob Flanagan, an artist who transformed his experiences with cystic fibrosis and perpetual pain into a form of celebration, presents himself as a BDSM superhero clad in a cape crafted from a hospital gown. Collaborating with his dominatrix partner Sheree Rose, Flanagan’s art blurs the line between suffering and pleasure, inviting viewers to question their own perceptions.
The Definitive Masterpiece: Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose's 'Supermasochist':
Perhaps the most provocative work in the exhibition, ‘Supermasochist’ by Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose stands as a testament to their 24/7 sadomasochistic relationship. Known for his appearance in Nine Inch Nails’ controversial and universally banned 1992 music video, “Happiness in Slavery,” Flanagan’s life was devoted to exploring the intersections of sexuality and suffering.
Hardcore is at Sadie Coles HQ, London, until 5 August 2023
The Compelling Art of Stanislava Kovalcikova:
Stanislava Kovalcikova’s artwork captivates with its disconcerting yet alluring imagery. In her paintings, denizens of the forest acknowledge the viewer while engaging in enigmatic and sometimes violent acts. The longer one gazes, the more Kovalcikova’s work reveals a tapestry woven with elements of folklore, religion, and mythology—a truly immersive and thought-provoking experience.
Doreen Lynette Garner, AKA King Cobra:
Doreen Lynette Garner, also known as King Cobra, presents a tantalizing installation titled “White Bread.” Placed upon a mirrored plinth, a bamboo casket contains a visually striking yet unsettling meal. Slices of bread are interrupted by an indigestible intestinal tube, akin to the surprising inclusion of a hard-boiled egg in a veal-and-ham pie. Garner’s creation challenges conventional norms, incorporating resin clay, hair weave, acrylic, silicone, and tattoo ink as unconventional ingredients.
Carolee Schneemann's thought-provoking piece, "Vulva's Morphia”:
Carolee Schneemann’stakes viewers on a mesmerizing journey through the education of an innocent abroad named Vulva. Created in 1995, the artwork features a series of text lines that chronicle Vulva’s experiences while intertwining vulgar sketches of female sex organs, medical illustrations, fragments of pornography, and photographs of fertility gods and ancient sculptures.
This groundbreaking exhibition defies conventional boundaries, highlighting the dynamic and unique nature of sex. Choosing to create from this deeply personal space requires vulnerability, which ultimately becomes a source of tremendous strength.
While not all works in “Hardcore” fit the traditional definition of pornography, they navigate the complex terrain of sex, embracing its infinite contradictions. Sex possesses an undeniable sense of urgency and exhilaration, leading to an ongoing struggle for control over its expression. This power dynamic determines who can truly feel alive and dictates societal norms.
Located on the ground floor of the gallery, visitors to the exhibition will discover a curated selection of books meticulously chosen by Isabella Burley, the mastermind behind Climax Books. Founded in 2020, Climax Books specializes in rare and countercultural books and magazines on art and photography. Burley, who previously served as the editor-in-chief of Dazed and currently holds the position of chief marketing officer at Acne Studios, has long been connected to the artists featured in ‘Hardcore’.
Burley’s selection of titles and ephemera acts as a response to the thought-provoking exhibition. Each item chosen reflects the essence of the show, further immersing visitors in the exploration of power dynamics, intimacy, and the diverse aspects of human sexuality. With her deep understanding of the artistic landscape and her commitment to promoting countercultural expressions, Burley’s curation provides a unique opportunity for viewers to engage with a variety of rare and inspiring materials.
