The beauty of digital world we are all consciously or not living in is that everyone there no matter her/his age, nationality, education or social level has an opportunity to express his creative ideas and transfer them instantly to the world. The world with no borders, political conflicts or language barriers, world where everyone speaks and understands the language of art. If in the analog reality we needed months or even years to been seen or heart and thus create a community of fans or “followers” nowadays a single post on a social media platform can change one’s destiny.
That’s what exactly happened to Alexander Osipov. A youngster of 22 years old from Naberezhnye Chelny (Russia), who had no particular preconditions to become a streetwear designer, woke up famed right after his post on Instagram. In fact, a pair of “injection sneakers” (posted on his Insta page), originally customized by Osipov, went viral and triggered huge interest from big Instagram players.A boy who likes sports and music but clearly has prominent artistic potential is our guest today. Here is **Alexander Osipov** exclusively for FOXYLAB NY.

In your interviews you said that you did not follow any specific design studies neither have any artistic background in your family. How do you explain that you came up with an idea to reimagine sport shoes in such creative way?

I enjoy the process of creation itself a lot; and it has always been a source of inspiration for me. Regarding shoes and clothes’ customization, it’s thanks to the works of @nicolemclaughlin who made me look differently at ordinary garment pieces.

Do you believe that nowadays young talent doesn’t need to follow any “classical” educational pattern to become famous and accomplished?

It’s very personally: some need to follow the classic educational scheme to achieve the result. At the same time I believe that educational patterns put people in a box, somehow limit them and it’s not the way which suits me.

Why sneakers?

I just love sneakers) even before I started to design them, I used to have many pairs (of sneakers) in my personal collection. Customisation of these sport shoes gives me freedom, I can make whatever I want with them and I like it.

Every single pair of sneakers you customise is unique, how much time do you averagely spend to design it?

Sometime a “ready-made” idea comes naturally and I spend 30 minutes or one hour to accomplish it. And at times I change something and remake in the process (of creation) – in such case it could take few days.

Do you have any plans/ ideas to customise any other streetwear pieces? Or may be create them from scratch?

I think that in the future I will customise cloths as well, but at time being I like to design sneakers.

When you “injection sneakers” went viral in social media, what was your reaction like? Did you receive any proposals of art fashion collaboration for example?

It happened so unexpectedly and fast that I was not ready for such scenario. Such reaction surprised and inspired me so much that I was like: wow! How much more interesting stuff I can create! And yes, lots of fashion Instagram accounters as well as garments stores started to propose me collaborations, like Bershka for example.

Do you consider yourself as an artist? What is art for you?

Art is when a (creative) person expresses his/her ideas and concepts; therefore, yes, I may call myself an artist.

Do you believe that art should/ can be wearable?

Any idea and its expression is a part of art. If one conveys his/her inner world and vision in cloths, why not to wear it?

Metaverse and digital world offer limitless opportunities to creatives all around the globe. What is you relation to all this new virtual reality?

Its so dope, I adore it! Works and ideas of creatives all around the world can be shared with everyone, instantly – its impressing.

How big part does virtual world play in your life?

Thanks to the digital and virtual world any guy from France or a girl from New York can see my art works. The whole world has access to them ; that’s why it’s so important to me.

We are aware of extreme difficult situation people in Russia are passing through, especially the art community. Some choose to leave the country. What about you? If you have an opportunity to live abroad, would you leave your native Naberezhnye Chelny?

Yes, the situation is very tense now, and we all hope that it will stop very soon. I am definitely planning to leave Naberezhnye Chelny to move to bigger city of Russia like Moscow. To live abroad would be a great experience which I would not refuse)

Besides shoe design, what kind of art, if any, do attract you?

Music. It’s always with me when I am creating.
