Renowned as a trailblazing photographer whose lens encapsulated the essence of the Swinging Sixties, Terry O’Neill secured his place in history as one of the world’s most collected photographers. Hailing from London, he embarked on a captivating career that spanned generations, chronicling the rise of film, fashion, and music icons who would etch their names into the annals of fame.
Born on July 30, 1938, in the vibrant British capital, Terry O’Neill’s journey took unexpected twists before he embraced his true calling. While initially aspiring to become a priest, destiny led him towards a different rhythm. Fueled by a passion for jazz drumming, O’Neill found himself in the midst of an unforeseen opportunity when he secured a job at the photographic unit of BOAC, which would later transform into British Airways. It was here that he honed his skills by capturing poignant moments of travelers arriving and departing at the terminals. One such striking photograph, that of the slumbering Home Secretary Rab Butler on a bench, would prove to be a defining moment that charted O’Neill’s course into the world of newspaper photography on the bustling Fleet Street.
Destiny played its hand again, propelling him to snap the iconic portrait of a budding band that would shake the world – The Beatles. Little did he know that this encounter would set in motion a lifelong journey of photographing the most prominent stars of the era and beyond. While the Beatles and Rolling Stones found themselves immortalized through his lens, O’Neill’s talent extended beyond music, capturing the charisma of Hollywood’s beloved faces like Audrey Hepburn and later, contemporary favorites like Nicole Kidman.
What set Terry O’Neill apart was not just his skill with the camera, but also his ability to connect with his subjects, forging lasting friendships with many of the famous personalities he photographed. In the annals of Oscar history, one of his best-known images was that of Faye Dunaway, taken in 1977, the morning after her remarkable victory for her stellar performance in “Network.” As fate would have it, the two would later be united in matrimony during the vibrant 1980s.
Throughout his illustrious career, O’Neill remained steadfast in his commitment to share his extraordinary work with the world. In his later years, he dedicated his focus to exhibitions and publications, providing insights into the stories behind his legendary photographs.
An unmissable exhibition, titled “Stars” now graces the hallowed halls of Fotografiska, located at 281 Park Ave South, New York. Running from June 2 through September 16, this exclusive collection of photographs delves into O’Neill’s complete archive, featuring timeless portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Amy Winehouse, and Frank Sinatra. Notably, the exhibit reveals captivating color portraits of luminaries like Brigitte Bardot and Mick Jagger, offering a fresh perspective on their timeless allure. Among the gems are also never-before-seen photographs of legendary figures like Elvis Presley and Bianca Jagger.
Terry O’Neill’s lens has forever captured the essence of the stars, providing an eternal glimpse into the captivating lives of those who have shaped popular culture. As the world cherishes his remarkable legacy, “Stars” allows us to traverse time and immerse ourselves in the magic of his iconic artistry.
