Halloween is finally here! While everyone dressing up as infernal creatures and preparing tricks and treats, let’s get you into the spirit of the holiday with Spanish artist Pablo Iglesias Prada, who captures human evil in his paintings.
I would like to start from the beginning – how did you get into art?
My name is Pablo Iglesias Prada and I am an artist who lives and resides in a small city in the north of Spain (Gijón). My beginnings in the world of art were quite premature since from a very young age I always liked to draw and everything related to cartoons. As a child I told everyone that I wanted to work drawing Donald Duck. In the end, the hobby became my job.
Your Instagram info box says: “I try to capture human evil in my paintings”. Where did you get this interest in the darker side of human existence?
I guess that’s due to my taste for darkness and evil. It always seemed to me that the bad guy in the movies was much more interesting than the good guy, even if he was the protagonist. The bad guys tend to have more twisted minds, more fun, they are much more captivating characters. Kindness doesn’t interest me, it bores me.
Your works are simple in form and colour. They are appealing in their naivety but can be frightening in their content. Was this contrast intentionally created?
One of the universal truths is that: less is more. This rule works perfectly in any artistic discipline… painting, photography, architecture, cinema… I try to make my characters have “life” using as few resources as possible, be it color, shapes or background.
What do you think: Is evil also often hidden behind a pretty cover?
Evil hides where you least expect it. It’s a classic to see in the news how the neighbors of a Serial Killer comment that: “he was a very good boy, we cannot believe that he did such a barbarity”.
Which is your favourite sin and which do you think is the worst?
The truth is that I never considered what my favorite capital sin would be… I think I would choose Anger. Losing control is one of my deepest fears.
As the worst I think I would choose envy because of how widespread it is in the time we live in. Envy is the daily bread of millions of people.
Do you believe in the existence of otherworldly beings outside our material world?
I firmly believe in it, of course I have no proof nor have I had any experience that could prove such an affirmation… I only base myself on the fact that it would be really unfortunate if human beings were the summit of creation. Thinking like that is depressing to death
In September you presented to the public your first collaboration with the electronic label KR3 Records. It was a vinyl cover that you specially designed for the band Qujaku. Tell us about this experience. And what place does music occupy in your life?
Collaborating with the KR3 label and with S1H1I1V1A was a real pleasure. Both are very professional, they know very well what they want and they have made things very easy.
Music is one of the most important things in my life, I´m always listening to music, I feel alive listening to music.
Normally, while I’m painting, I tend to listen to a lot of Death metal or Grindcore… although sometimes my body asks me for other, more relaxed styles. I´m not a musically closed person, I like to listen to everything and discover new groups/soloists.
Aren’t you afraid to be alone with your demon portraits? 🙂
No, not at all… in fact they are usually very good “people”, hahaha. You have to find a connection with them, then everything is easier.
Is there a portrait among your work that reflects your dark side?
All my characters have something of me, it’s inevitable… guessing what exactly is more difficult.
List your favorite horror movies.
This is a very complicated question, there are many horror movies that I like… to name a few: Alien, Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Shining, The Thing, Suspiria…
What is the strangest thing that happened to you?
Without a doubt being a father is one of the strangest things that have happened to me in recent years hehehe.
Why do you make art?
I make art because I love it, because it relaxes me, because it connects me with the world, and because I don’t know how to do anything else.

A thin edge of seduction and the consumerism fetish is thoroughly blurred in Acosta’s art in the use of both light, and dark tones. Bold lines serve as a fashionable juxtaposition of a peaceful dream-like state and a vivid color, representing action and presence in the moment.
