Sean Mundy is a photographer and digital artist from Montréal, Canada. From a young age he was always very creative. He was interested in making things – first it was drawing, then it was writing, then music, and eventually he settled on photography and visual art (while still dabbling in music). His parents purchased a very small/cheap digital camera for him when he was about 15 for a school trip, and slowly but surely after that trip he began to use the camera more and more and eventually began doing more creative work alone, which led up to the work he does today.
Which message do you transmit to the world?
I do not really have a singular cohesive message I am trying to convey through all of my artworks, it varies by piece and oftentimes, there isn’t an explicit message. Some images will touch on themes of isolation, loneliness, the power of persuasion and groupthink, learned helplessness, whereas other images are intended to be more strictly formal, showcasing shapes and colours and forms.
What does fire mean to you in your works?
Fire as a symbol can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people depending on the context it is shown in, and for my work that is almost always the case and the most important part. In some images, the fire is just a surreal/dramatized way of showing something being blocked, obstructed, or divided; the symbol “could” have been something else, but that was the symbol I chose to use. Other times, fire can be used more literally as a destructive force, it truly all depends on the image and the context.
What does the red threat symbolize?
Red is one of my favourite colours because of how *loud* it is, and all the baggage it brings to an image just by its presence. It can symbolize violence, an impending threat, romance and love, it really depends. I try to not use it too much just in case it can become repetitive, since it definitely is a powerful colour to include in an image.
What is your favorite photo from your works and why?
It always changes depending on what I am working on and how long ago a piece was made, but at the moment my favourite piece would be “Blending In”. It is my favourite at this precise moment because it was an un-planned image, and I think it is a very subtly powerful image showing the human form and hinting at our desire to belong and be a part of something bigger, or to just blend in at whatever cost and not be noticed. I also like the colours in the image as they are very earthy, and I often use a lot more subtle colours and a lot of greys, so this is a nice chance for me.
What is loneliness for you? Is it a strength or weakness?
Loneliness is not something that people choose, so I would not call it a weakness. At the same time, I do not know if calling it a “strength” makes the most sense either. However I think going through a period of loneliness will likely imbue a person with more strength in the long run as they have had an undesirable experience and if they do not want to experience it again, they will have to change something in their lives or about themselves, they will have to grow.
You are also a singer. Does it help you to run away from an every day’s routine?
It would if I did more singing, but unfortunately I do not do very much singing lately, mostly because I am focused on finishing photo pieces and maintaining my momentum creating photographs/images – I will definitely do more singing and create music once I create a certain amount of images over the summer before the nice weather leaves us here in Montreal.
You published a video “How to change your life in 1 year” that you had experienced by yourself. You are an artist. Very often artists need inspiration to start the work. How did you succeed in being productive being in strict parameters?
I find that boundaries or confines can often help inspire you actually; without them, anything is a possibility, and that sometimes can be too overwhelming. If you limit yourself a little bit, you now have guardrails and you know where the edge of what you can do is. As an artist I am very lucky in that, I am often very inspired, I can not really “turn off” my creative brain, so for me being productive is just a matter of finding ways to keep that inspiration tamed to certain areas where it can perform at its peak and meet motivation and drive to allow me to make great work.
