The Drip Collection, created by Unform Studio based in Pennsylvania, premiered at Miami Design Week during Miami Design Week. This collection uniquely combines sleek industrial metal with the natural, chaotic look of paint pooling. It captures the essence of Miami’s vibrant colors in its bold, collectible furniture pieces. The collection draws inspiration from the early American Mahantango Valley painted furniture, and is crafted in the same valleys of Pennsylvania. Unlike traditional painted furniture, the Drip Collection focuses on using paint as its core material, transforming it into the main component of its form. This approach gives life to color in a tangible way, offering a bold, tactile experience that stands out in an era increasingly filled with digital and artificial elements.

“The Drip Collection conveys the power of color and the importance of physicality, but combines this with a playful sensibility. In an increasingly digital and virtual world, I’m excited to show real products that make a bold statement with their design and physicality,” says Ryan Twardzik, Unform Studio design principal.

The Drip Collection represents a fusion of spontaneity and structure in furniture design, blending organic, random shapes with the precision of industrial manufacturing techniques. It draws on the ethos of post-war American art movements like Abstract Expressionism, reminiscent of artists like Helen Frankenthaler who embraced a certain surrender to the medium’s inherent characteristics. This collection is inspired by Frankenthaler’s soak-stain technique, where paint naturally seeps into the canvas, forming distinctive patterns and dynamic forms. Each piece in the Drip Collection emulates this approach, with the paint’s natural pooling dictating its unique shape and appearance.

ABOUT UNFORM STUDIO

Ryan Twardzik founded Unform Studio in 2022 after years of multidisciplinary design work with the intention to create furniture and products that, through their beauty of form and tactility, imbue a layer of joy and inspiration into our everyday lives. Ryan’s work offers a new take on the age-old modernist sentiment that “form follows function,” showing that when the two coexist with equal importance, products can transcend their utilitarian underpinnings and truly become part of the fabric of our lives.Ryan’s designs, while somewhat radical or surprising in their composition, are comfortable and functional pieces of furniture. Through bold, playful design, Ryan’s work walks the line between being sculptural and sculpture, always remaining as fully usable products. Based in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania—the heart of the Anthracite Coal Region—Ryan looks to contribute to a regional design industry based on local manufacturing, heritage, and forward-looking design.
