Let’s talk about “abstract collage”. The art form that had not been mentioned in media enouth.

The purpose of the abstract collage is to challenge traditional perceptions of reality, evoke emotions, and encourage viewers to interpret the artwork in their own unique ways. By manipulating the images in a non-traditional manner, artists can create visually striking and thought-provoking compositions that often transcend conventional representation. It allows for a free-flowing and experimental approach to art, where the artist’s imagination plays a significant role in the final creation.

The term collage appeared around 1910 by the two pioneers of the Cubist movement, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. These two started to experiment with assorted materials, moving away from the traditional fine art practices, this started the rise of the collage art.

We spoke with Ekaterina Lukovnikova, an abstract collage creator based in Madrid, who responded on few our questions and shared the images of her abstract collages.

What is the personal meaning of these collages?

Is to realize my creative self.

Why did you pick the form of art “collage”?

I chose collage because there is a lot of freedom in this art form. Plus I love surrealism.

The connection between each of these images?

Each of these images is connected by the fact that the color and form contain my emotions and moods that I felt at the moment of their creation.

What is your process of creating the collage? Can you tell us your step by step?

If we are talking about abstract collage, when I create it, it is as if I am immersed in meditation, the shapes and colors are chosen intuitively. If we are talking about a collage with a certain plot, characters, it just spontaneously arises in my head and I either write down the idea or immediately run to implement it in the computer or manually (if it is an analog collage).

What is "collage" for you?

Collage for me is my separate world, which I can create exactly as I want. It can have any colors, shapes, characters, and artistic techniques.

Some of the common techniques used in creating abstract collages include:

Tearing: Tearing up images or photographs and arranging the torn pieces in a non-representational manner, so the original subjects become unrecognizable.

Layering: Pasting images on top of one another to create a complex and multidimensional composition. This can involve partially overlapping images, creating transparency effects, or blending different elements together.

Overlapping: Overlapping images or portions of images in a way that alters their meaning and creates intriguing visual connections.

Distorting: Applying various filters or editing techniques to warp, stretch, or manipulate images to create abstract forms and textures.

Ripping: Applying colored surfaces with either straight edges or organically ripped edges to create a visually textured and dynamic collage.

Mixed Media: Combining different materials, such as photographs, magazine cutouts, newspaper clippings, fabric, or any other found objects, to add depth and texture to the collage.

Imagination: Let your creative power flow and add some fun into the mix
