Sotheby’s CEO, Charles Stewart, expressed excitement about the acquisition, highlighting the building’s historical significance and the auction house’s commitment to transforming and innovating for their clients. The acquisition also ensures the preservation of this architectural masterpiece in a landmark district.

The Whitney Museum’s outgoing director, Adam Weinberg, is pleased that the Breuer Building will continue to serve as a platform for artistic and cultural purposes. This move allows the building’s rich history to be preserved while offering new opportunities for showcasing artworks and artifacts.

This acquisition is part of Sotheby’s ongoing global expansion strategy. Alongside the transformation of the Breuer Building, the auction house plans to open flagship salesrooms in Hong Kong and Paris in 2024. Additionally, the unveiling of Gantry Point, a state-of-the-art facility in Long Island City, is expected this year.
The future looks bright as Sotheby’s breathes new life into the Breuer Building, creating an inspiring and accessible art space that will contribute to New York City’s vibrant artistic landscape.
